Working lives of teachers and leaders report


This is really concerning reading....


New data on teacher and headteacher wellbeing and workload was published by the DfE last week (27.09.24). Headlines include: 



⛔ WORKLOAD:

Leaders average working hours for those working full-time were 58.2 hours. 38% of leaders work between 60 and 69 hours a week.


Teachers average hours worked per week increased for full-time teachers to 52.4 hours.



⛔ WELLBEING:

Anxiety: 44% of participants experienced high levels of anxiety, with an additional 18% experiencing a medium level.


Stress: 88% of respondents said that they experience stress at work. With 63% of these saying that their mental health was adversely affected.


Support for wellbeing: Only 52% of participants said that their school provides them with access to teacher support or wellbeing programmes.



⛔ CONSIDERING LEAVING

Just over one-third of teachers and leaders (36%) indicated that they were considering leaving the state school sector in the next 12 months, for reasons other than for retirement. This represents an increase from 25% in 2022.



⛔ REASONS FOR CONSIDERING LEAVING

Of those teachers and leaders considering leaving the profession, for reasons other than retirement:


94% are due to workload concerns

84% are due to stress or poor wellbeing

83% are due to their views not being valued by policy makers
