Work life balance

Have you ever been guilty of putting your job first ahead of your loved ones?

I have.

As a Headteacher and trust leader, there were times that I was so wrapped up in work priorities and challenges, that I temporarily forgot about the all the other priorities in my life.

This is a photo of my lovely mum, Sheila, who passed away almost two years ago.  My mum was amazing and such an example to my brothers and I, and many others that she came into contact with. She made such a positive difference to so many lives, despite her battles with Multiple Sclerosis, which she lived with for 40 years.

As mum got older, she required more and more help and support. Whether I was ordering her groceries online, speaking with her GP or putting in place carers, I needed to find time to ensure that she was safe and well. Even throughout her last few years, mum continued to be interested in others and tried to do small things to make a positive difference to their lives.

It can be really tough juggling both your work and home responsibilities. As well as being a leader, we are also partners, children, parents, siblings, friends and neighbours.  Mum always understood when I was too busy to visit, or had no time to call. But, looking back, there were times when I wished I had balanced things better…

As we start this new academic year, be kind to yourself, and to others, as we find the balance between home and school. I believe effective leaders do this well.

🤔 It is not a weakness to spend time with your family during the evenings.

🤔 Working until late every evening, or over the weekend, doesn’t make you more successful.

🤔 Occasionally leaving work a little earlier to visit a family member, or pick up a child from school, doesn’t make you seem lazy – it makes you seem human!

Effective leaders model a healthy work/life balance to their colleagues and teams. If you sometimes struggle to get that balance right, I might be the coach for you. Please contact me to find out more about how I can help.
