When the boot is on the other foot...

So, last week I had a timely reminder of just how stressful inspection can be for school leaders and governors.

On the very same day as I was making an initial inspection call to a school leader, I was called on to speak to a different inspector about the local primary school where I chair an ethos committee.

I was surprised to find myself really nervous about the impending interview. I suddenly doubted my ability to share the right information about the school, and I was so worried about letting the school and the leaders down. I felt jittery and unsure.

When the interview with the visiting inspector actually took place, I found my confidence and remembered that I knew my stuff, and the interview went very well.

But it has been a timely reminder.

As an inspector, I always try really hard to put people at their ease, whilst still carrying out my role to the best of my ability. I try to be reasonable and flexible so that I can work around the demands of the school and the needs of the senior leaders. I try to be human and understanding of the things that crop up.

However, I still need to remember the levels of stress that leaders, governors and teachers will be feeling when speaking with me.

So if you're in the privileged position of inspecting, or are in a senior role in a school or trust, just remember the impact of your visits and your words have on those around you. A throw away comment or a misjudged gesture could really undermine and damage the colleagues you are working with.

Tread lightly. Show respect. Be kind.
