Start of term nerves?

The start of term is an interesting time - it's both exciting and full of potential, but also it can feel nerve-wracking or even overwhelming.

Even after 30 years in education, I still find it hard to sleep well on the night before the beginning of term - even though I am looking forward to seeing my colleagues and the children, and excited about implementing new priorities.

As we return to school for the new academic year, it is important that we acknowledge the range of emotions being felt by our teams. Some will be excited to return, whilst others will be feeling anxious or unsure.

It's so important to be emotional intelligent as we start the new term. if we want to engage and inspire our staff teams, we need to first of all ensure that we tune into their emotional wellbeing.

As you welcome colleagues back to school, take some time to check in to see how they are, and really listen for what is said, and unsaid. I've found this really important as this has allowed me to solve problems, reassure, provide additional support or resource and generally settle everyone back in.

When you have ensured that your staff are feeling safe and well supported, you will then find them receptive to new priorities, and eager to support you and the children to make the school year a success.

How else would you ensure a successful start of term? Join in the conversation and share your thoughts. I'd love to hear from you.
