Preparing for a new role?

Recently I’ve been working with a number of leaders who have been preparing for stepping up to more senior roles after the summer. It has been really interesting to listen to their reflections as they prepare for this key change. Although these leaders work in different positions, in a range of organisations across the UK there have been some common threads informing their thinking.

If you are getting ready for a new role in the near future, I hope that these key questions are useful to you.

🤔 Vision

  • What do I / we want to achieve here?

  • Why is this vision appropriate to our context?

  • How will I/we construct this vision?

  • How do I communicate the vision?

  • How do we make the vision a shared goal?

🤔 Culture:

  • How will we work together?

  • What values are important to me, and us?

  • How will I share my expectations?

  • How will I ensure buy in from staff?

  • How will I tackle colleagues who are not meeting my expectations/ living out agreed values?

🤔 Priorities:

  • What do I need to find out first?

  • How will I gather information or data?

  • Are there any quick wins?

  • Is there anything you think you can stop doing?

  • What are the priorities that will make the biggest positive difference, most quickly?

  • What can be left for later?

  • How will I be able to measure the impact of initial improvement activities?

🤔 Communication:

  • What systems of communication already exist?

  • Are these effective?

  • If not, where are the gaps in communication?

  • What other strategies for communication might I deploy?

Whatever change you are facing in the near future, I hope that these questions will aid your reflection and planning. Reach out if you think coaching or consultancy might be able to support you in your leadership journey. I might be the right person for you. 😊
