As it’s National Mentoring Day, a big shout out today to all those who mentor!
I have recently been reminded about how useful mentorship is through my 1:1 mentoring on the Building Growth South West marketing bootcamp course that I have been engaged in. There are some things that I simply don’t know and through the additional mentoring sessions included on the course I have the opportunity to ask the expert leader, Rachel McGowan, for her advice. It has been so invaluable.
As leaders we take on so many different roles with our teams: we coach, collaborate, train, direct, and other times we mentor.
Whilst I am making a living through coaching school and trust leaders, I know that my clients sometimes really value being offered mentoring within a coaching session. There is nothing worse than being coached, when you just want to be told something you don’t know, or when you’ve run out of ideas and just want to hear another perspective.
So when I am coaching, I will contract with my clients to see whether they would find a little mentoring useful. They all say yes. When I offer advice, I always seek permission from my client first, and preface it with explaining that I do not expect my advice to be followed. However, these moments can sometimes bring some great rewards for clients. Whilst they may not always follow my advice, it may spark some new thinking or generate an alternative perspective or solution to that which they were considering.
Here are some of the amazing professionals who have mentored me along the way:
Jenny Lloyd, Rebecca Cosgrave, Philip Mantell, Cheryl Weyman, Tracey Cleverly, Katy Burns, Claudia Heimgartner, Sarah Fox, Katherine Powell
