š¤ Do you feel like you belong in school? How about your pupils?
š¤ Are you made to feel like a valued part of the team?Ā
š¤ Leaders, how do you cultivate a strong sense of belonging?
In schools, as in all workplaces, the sense of purpose and belonging makes a huge difference.Ā
Research shows that employees who feel they belong are 50% more productive and 75% less likely to leave their jobs. When people feel connected to a shared mission, both well-being and performance thrive.
Additionally, research indicates that students who feel a strong sense of purpose and belonging are not only happier but also perform better academically. In fact, studies show that pupils with a sense of belonging are 56% more likely to be high achievers and experience improved mental health outcomes.
However, alarming statistics reveal thatĀ 1 in 4 pupilsĀ do not feel they belong in school, with this figure rising among disadvantaged groups and those with special educational needs.Ā This lack of belonging can lead to disengagement, increased absenteeism, and even exclusion, ultimately impacting students' life chances and well-being.Ā
Schools that foster a sense of belonging see benefits such as:
ā Increased student motivation
ā Improved academic achievement
ā Enhanced staff well-being and retention
ā Reduced absenteeism
As educators and leaders, we must prioritise building a culture of belonging. This involves actively engaging with staff and students, recognising their unique contributions, and ensuring that our curriculum is relevant and meaningful to students' lives. Letās work together to ensure every child and member of staff feels like they belong in our schools.Ā
