🤔 How are the current challenges in schools having a negative impact on your staff’s wellbeing?
🤔 How are you managing the challenges that this presents?
Last week, I worked with a client who has found that her start of term has not gone to plan. Due to stretched school finances, her planned leadership role for this year has been cut. She has been left feeling extremely disappointed and frustrated. In addition, she's been left in a vacuum without any real direction. Due to staff shortages, stretched budgets and high workloads, she's found herself being pulled in lots of directions. Her lack of control in this situation was causing her to feel stressed and overwhelmed.
My client and I spent time working on protecting her wellbeing through identifying ways in which she could prioritise healthy habits and self-care, and also spent time considering ways in which she could lead effectively in the slots of time she does have available at school.
By the end of the session, my client had identified lots of strategies that she could use to manage her stress caused by the uncertainty of her situation. She also came up with a really rigorous plan about how she might be able to use the pockets of time she does have available to drive forward her priorities.
My belief is that in almost every situation, it is possible to improve wellbeing through carving out some control and agency. This might be about identifying small things that you can control within your context, or through proactively planning for change in the future instead.
🤔 How are the challenges in schools affecting you?
🤔 What solutions are you putting in place to manage less than ideal circumstances?
