Feeling like you have no control?

Stephen Covey's circle's of influence

🤔 Do you ever feel like you lack influence or control?

Over the last few weeks, I’ve coached a number of leaders who were feeling exactly this way. They were all leading in organisations that had been judged to be failing in some way.

In each case, my clients were not directly responsible for the failures, as they had middle leadership roles. But they were all left leading within the organisations, pending systemic change.

In some cases, this had led to the leaders feeling totally defeated and even fearful about their future. They were left feeling that they had no power and little control over their situation.

If you find yourself in the position where you perceive that you have little influence or control, it can be really helpful to use a tool, such a Stephen Covey’s Circles of influence.

With one of my clients, we used this tool to identify that the leader did indeed have influence and control over some aspects of their role. This enabled them to subtly change their mindset, so rather than feeling defeated, they felt motivated and energised. The tool allowed them to see that they could still shape their own journey, and positively contribute to the development of their schools.

One leader said, “I started this session feeling like I was lacking direction and purpose. I now feel a clear sense of purpose and know my next steps, which I hope will make a positive difference to my organisation.”

🤔 Do you ever feel that you are directionless or have no control? How can you challenge your own thinking on this?

🤔 Leaders, are you ensuring that all of your team members have the opportunity to make a positive difference? Do they have influence or control over their areas of responsibility?
