Developing Spirituality

I am fortunate to work with schools and trusts offering consultancy advice in relation to Church school effectiveness and development of Christian distinctiveness, and I am also a SIAMS inspector.

In effective Church schools, there is a shared understanding of spirituality and spiritual development.  Furthermore, opportunities are deliberately sought out to develop spirituality - across the curriculum - and throughout the school day, including in collective worship.

However, in the Annual Report from the National Director of Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) for 2022 - 2023, the following evaluation about spirituality was shared:

“The curriculum in the majority of Church schools, whilst increasingly reflecting the vision, does not include spirituality as a matter of routine. Ad hoc responses to awe and wonder are commonplace, and are of value as far as they go; but planned opportunities for pupils to explore the spiritual aspects of subject matter remain less commonplace.”

If your school or trust are curious about understanding spirituality and how it can be developed throughout the curriculum, please get in touch.
