Building belonging for staff

heirarchy of happiness - triangle showing importance of belonging

Did you know how important building a sense of belonging is for staff?

In a recent research project 'Place and Belonging in School: why it matters today' commissioned by the NEU, the following findings were identified:

✅ Schools that foster a strong sense of belonging have far greater staff retention rates.

✅ Teachers who feel they belong are more likely to stay in their roles, with one teacher stating: "you commit and know you have a future and that encourages you to be yourself and to innovate".

✅ Teachers who feel they can make a difference and have a strong sense of personal and professional agency in their school are more likely to experience belonging.

✅ A shared language of belonging in schools, not only for students but also for staff, contributes to a positive school culture.

When staff feel they belong:

✅ They can be more creative, innovative, and confident.

✅ They feel respected and accepted.

✅ They stay longer in an organisation and make more of a contribution.

✅ They have a sense of well-being and agency.

✅ They feel more involved and committed to their job.
