A visit to 'Escher in the Palace' museum

Yesterday we visit the "Escher in the Palace" museum in The Hague, Holland.  I've long been fascinated in Escher's work, since I first saw an exhibition of his prints more than thirty years ago.

I've always been particularly intrigued by his fascination with tessellating images and transformation.  Many of his prints demonstrate change; birds gradually transforming into fish, for example.

Visiting the museum has reminded me about how influenced I've been by Escher's work.  For example, last year, when designing my website, I shared the blue and white Escher print (below) with my web designer and asked her to come up with something like that - I love the calm, serene feeling of that print.

We eventually settled on using a repeating pattern of a dragonfly for the website and tried to replicate the blue and chalky colours of the Escher print.  Unfortunately neither of us were talented enough to create an 'Escheresque' tessellating or transforming image, but I love how dragonflies also represent transformation.

In many faiths and cultures, dragonflies are considered a symbol of transformation, growth, hope, renewal, adaptability, maturity and self-development.  These concepts really resonate with my view of coaching and consultancy.  I hope that the clients I work with will experience optimism, growth, self-awareness and transformation over time.

Ironically, today I've also worn a dress which is reminiscent of an Escher print so thought I'd share that with you too!

Have you been influenced by an artist or thinker? I'd love to hear from you.
